India Evangelical Lutheran Church (IELC)^

History:
India was the first mission field of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, begun in 1894. The work was blessed with mass movements, especially among the oppressed people of the land. Responding to this interest, the LCMS sent 60 missionaries to India between 1920 and 1930. In 1924, Concordia Theological Seminary was established in the town of Nagercoil at the southern tip of India.

Three hospitals were established around South India, and they continue to serve today. The Missouri Evangelical Lutheran Mission (MELIM) also established a considerable school system, which today has come to include 59 elementary schools, 11 high schools, seven schools for the handicapped, a teachers’ training institute, and five boarding homes. About 800 teachers serve in the school system. MELIM worked in two major language areas (Tamil and Malayalam), and now the church has moved into seven more language areas.
