GERMANY – From October 10-14, the editorial team of the Concordia Lutheran-Catholic Augustana Working Group (AWG) met in Freiburg in Breisgau (Germany) under the leadership of the two co-chairmen, Bishop Dr. Juhana Pohjola (Helsinki, Finland) and Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Peter Birkhofer (Freiburg).

In preparation for a planned AWG publication that will address ministry, ordination, and the episcopate through a joint, pre-confessional reexamination of the topic, further coordination on content was necessary.

The group was received by Freiburg Archbishop Stephan Burger and also met with Manuel Herder and editor Maria Steiger from Herder Publishing House.

The Augustana Working Group (AWG) includes representatives of the International Lutheran Council (ILC) and the Catholic Church. Following the conclusion of the theological discussions between the ILC and the Catholic Church from 2014–2019, both sides proposed the establishment of a working group as a distinct ecumenical-theological forum.

The Augustana Working Group Working group is not an official dialogue commission.

Costs for the Lutheran participants in this meeting were generously covered by Germany’s Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church (Selbständige Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche – SELK).
