GUATEMALA – The International Lutheran Council (ILC) held its Latin America Regional Conference in Antigua from September 21-25. The theme of the conference was “Confessionality and Missionionality of the Latin American Church: Mission and Ministry in the Coming Decades.”

A total of 19 people attended the conference, which was held in the same venue where the ILC formally reconstituted itself as a council in 1993. Participants in this year’s regional conference included church presidents, special guests, and a number of pastors from the local church in Guatemala. Latin American countries represented at the conference included Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Guest speaker for the event was Rev. Dr. Jorge Groh. Dr. Groh, who spoke over two days during the conference, is a native of Argentina, and has served—among other work throughout his ministry—as a professor and president at Seminario Concordia, the seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Argentina (IELA); as The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s (LCMS) Regional Director for Latin America; and as a pastor in Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC).

Among other business, participants heard reports from each member church at the event; from organizations like Lutheran Bible Translators of Canada, Lutheran Hour Ministries, and Global Lutheran Outreach; and from the LCMS’ Missions Director for Latin America.

The ILC’s General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Klaus Detlev Schulz, addressed the conference virtually. The ILC’s Latin America regional representative, President Alceu Alton Figur of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Paraguay (Iglesia Evangelica Luterana del Paraguay – IELP) also presented.

The International Lutheran Council is a global association of confessional Lutheran church bodies dedicated to the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, grounded in the authority of Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions.
